Field Trip November 12, 2013

Our yearly 2nd Grade Field Trips to the Tuscarora Wildlife Education Program and Museum and Valley Quarries was a cold, exciting and very FUN day!

We saw animals from the size of a tiny hummingbird to the size of a large African elephant.  A taxidermist helped to preserve all of them, and they were donated for our enjoyment.

Inside the learning center, we learned about different types of animals and the food chain.  Here, students are playing Bingo using animals and habitats.

The above hawk, Gwenie, was a pet that was accidentally shot by some boys claiming to have been shooting pigeons.

Many students exclaim, "Its the The Grand Canyon!" when they first set eyes on this massive rock quarry.  We felt very small in contrast to the machines and rocks that were all around us.

The children enjoyed wearing hard hats for safety while down in the quarry.

The Rock Crusher in motion!  It was very noisy and dusty!  Usually water is used to keep the dust down, but it was too close to freezing to use water on the roads going in and out of the quarry.
The BIG "Tonka" trucks are always an exciting highlight of the "Rock Quarry."  It brings out the kid in all of us to see them in action!

Fire Prevention Week - October 8th

Way back in October, when it was nice and toasty warm outside, Lower Elementary had a Fire Prevention and Safety assembly with the Marion Fire Co.
Here are some pictures from our day!  The children had great questions for the fire fighters.
