Field Trip to TWEP Museum and Valley Quarries

What is every students favorite days of the year?
Field Trip days!
(Here's a little secret: Teachers really enjoy them too!)

The T.W.E.P. or Tuscarora Wildlife Educational Program Museum was started back when I was in Elementary school.  Back then it was just a classroom in the high school building with lots of small game animals.  Now it is more like visiting a Cabelas' store, only much closer!

Here's what we saw:

Two of my former teachers who helped to create the TWEP museum and have now both passed away: Mr. Brightbill - my elementary music teacher, and Mr. Neidigh - my 6th grade math teacher.
This hawk has a sad story, but one from which hunters can learn.

 In the "NEW" Africa room.
Outside to explore. . . and hear the marching band practicing. :)

They closed their eyes and listened.  This was Hard for some.

A nest high in the trees.

 Grassland Savannah animals.
North America room - still in progress.

Classroom for hands on learning. . . furs to touch!

 Someone even grew antlers!

After lunch and recess back at school. . . we headed to the Quarry (no longer known as Valley Quarries).
Everyone had to wear a hard hat and stay back from the large rocks that marked the edge.

The Rock Crusher. . . we got an up close and personal view later.  Much, much closer!!

It is small from here. . . but that dump truck is HUGE!

Guess who forgot to dress down for this field trip?  The one who planned it!!  Thank you Mrs. Crilley for the socks and shoes. :)
The bed of this truck is holding 1 ton of rock.  This was a good comparison as we were told how many tons a dump truck in the quarry hauls.

Can you find the massive water truck below, in the pictures above?  This is to put some "scale" to the enormousness of the quarry.

Large excavators removing the "strip" top layer.  Currently it is being used to create a land bridge through the center of the quarry to a part of land that is to become a "new" quarry site.  A bridge that is 400 feet across at the base.  200 feet high and 40 feet across at the top.  CRAZY!!
 Future employee!

Beginning of the "Land Bridge" to the back of the property.

 Bus vs. truck comparison.
Someone wanted a picture taken. LOL
Huge loader with Caterpillar tracks for wheels.
 At the Rock Crusher. . . we waited . . . and waited. . . to be the 2nd class/group to watch.
So we threw stones into the "hole."

And found the tiniest stones we could find.

And then looked for "twin" rocks. . . because no two rocks are alike. . . so I thought.

 Finally . . . the CRUSHER!!

And the conveyor belt (this should be rotated).
Looking down from the crusher's catwalk.

 More future employees????
Here comes a dump truck!  The crusher will have work to do.

The controller.  He had to stand to see over us.

Jumping a small gully.
